POPE LEO URGES GLOBAL PEACE IN FIRST SUNDAY ADDRESS CALLS FOR END TO WAR
POPE LEO URGES FOR GLOBAL PEACE
In his first Sunday address as the new pontiff on May 11, 2025, Pope Leo XIV passionately appealed for peace, urging world leaders to put an end to war. Speaking to an estimated crowd of 100,000 gathered in St. Peter’s Square, he called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, and unhindered humanitarian access to the region.
The Pope also addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine, stressing the urgent need for a “just and lasting peace” and expressing deep concern over the suffering caused by the conflict. He welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, expressing hope that it would lead to a long-term resolution between the two nations.
Echoing the sentiments of his predecessor, Pope Francis, Pope Leo described the state of global conflicts as a “third World War being fought piecemeal.” He appealed for the “miracle of peace” and spoke with compassion about the hardships faced by civilians, particularly in Ukraine and Gaza. His message, delivered with humility and conviction, was met with strong applause from the crowd.
As the first American and Augustinian pope, Pope Leo XIV is expected to continue Pope Francis’s path of reform, promoting inclusivity and social justice. His inaugural address has set a clear tone for a papacy focused on unity, compassion, and a firm stand against war.
