GHANA'S DIPLOMATIC MISSION IN WASHINGTON BACK IN OPERATION TODAY

GHANA'S EMBASSY REOPENS

Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C. has officially reopened today, May 29, 2025, following a temporary shutdown caused by an internal security breach and unauthorized financial practices.

The closure was prompted by the discovery that a local IT staff member had inserted an unapproved link on the embassy’s website, directing visa and passport applicants to a private company and charging them unofficial fees.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration recalled all home-based staff and suspended local employees while investigations were launched. A specialized IT team was deployed to secure the embassy’s digital systems, eliminate fraudulent links, and rebuild the online platforms.

The embassy now operates under new leadership, with a fresh team of diplomats led by a senior Ministry official. Their mandate includes strengthening administrative processes, restoring public trust, and ensuring transparency in service delivery.

The matter has also been referred to the Auditor-General and the Attorney-General for further investigation and appropriate legal action.

Efforts are underway to clear service backlogs, and the Ministry has expressed regret for any inconvenience caused during the closure. The embassy, located at 3512 International Drive NW, Washington, D.C., is now fully operational and available for consular services.
