Asante Kotoko striker Kwame Opoku has been named in the Black Stars squad for the upcoming Unity Cup, following a string of outstanding performances in the Ghana Premier League. His inclusion highlights the growing influence of domestic league players in the national team setup.

Opoku, who rejoined Kotoko in December 2024 after stints in Algeria and Morocco, has quickly made an impact. Since his return, he has scored six goals in seven league appearances, including a vital equalizer in a 1-1 draw against FC Samartex on March 15, 2025.

He made an immediate impression in his comeback match, scoring in Kotoko’s 2-0 win over Bibiani Gold Stars on December 27, 2024. His consistent scoring form and match-winning displays have earned him praise from fans and pundits alike.

Notably, Opoku was recently named in the Ghana Premier League Team of the Week for Matchweek 24, alongside Kotoko goalkeeper Frederick Asare, further underlining his resurgence.

Kotoko head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has commended Opoku’s quick adaptation, crediting his international experience and natural goal-scoring instincts. Opoku has also expressed his commitment to helping Kotoko achieve success and has promised to continue delivering goals for both club and country.

His selection for the Unity Cup not only marks a personal milestone but also reflects a broader recognition of talent within the local league. Opoku’s return to form has positioned him as a key figure in the Black Stars’ upcoming campaign.
