ERIC CHELLE VOWS IMPROVEMENT

Following the Super Eagles' hard-fought 2-1 win against Ghana in the Unity Cup semifinal, head coach Eric Chelle expressed satisfaction with his team's performance but stressed the importance of continued improvement and discipline going forward.

Chelle acknowledged that the victory had drawn attention to the team, especially given the historic rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana in what fans call the “Jollof Derby.” He noted that while the win was significant, it also placed more pressure on the squad to keep pushing their limits.

“Everybody has seen us now, so we must work even harder,” Chelle stated. “My coaching philosophy is based on high pressing and intensity, but it’s physically demanding. In the second half, the players dropped in energy, which is something we have to address.”

He admitted that fatigue played a role in the team's declining intensity later in the match, pointing out that his tactical approach requires not just technical skill but also physical endurance. Nonetheless, he praised his players for their resilience and determination, stating they fully deserved the win.

Beyond the tactical insights, Chelle highlighted his broader vision for the Super Eagles. He emphasized his commitment to developing local talent, asserting that one of his core objectives is to integrate home-based players into the national team setup.

“My job is to do the best I can — not just for the team, but for Nigerians as a whole. That includes giving local players opportunities and building a balanced squad,” he explained.

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles will face Jamaica in the Unity Cup final. Chelle sees the tournament as a valuable platform, not just for winning silverware, but for providing experience and visibility to up-and-coming African talents.
