TORRENTIAL RAINS TRIGGER DEADLY FLOODS IN ADENTAN, LEAVING THREE DEAD

THREE DEAD IN HEAVY RAINS

RAINN

A powerful downpour that lasted nearly three hours on Sunday, May 18, 2025, caused severe flooding across several parts of Accra, with the Adentan Municipality among the hardest-hit areas.

According to Adentan Municipal Chief Executive, Ella Esiman Nongo, three people died as a result of the flooding: two in Lakeside, a four-year-old girl in Nanakrom, and a man in New Legon.

The rain, which began around 3:00 p.m., submerged roads and cut off access to several communities. Floodwaters inundated areas such as Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, the Adenta-Dodowa stretch, Tema, and other nearby towns. Major drains, including the Odaw drain, overflowed, worsening the situation and trapping residents and vehicles.

Rescue teams managed to assist many stranded residents, particularly in Ashiyie. However, MCE Nongo highlighted the risk posed by construction on waterways, blaming such practices for blocking natural water flow and worsening flood impacts.

She stressed the urgent need for better drainage systems and stricter enforcement of building regulations to prevent future disasters.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) reported no casualties and pointed to poor drainage and waste management as major contributors to the flooding.

The incident has renewed calls for long-term solutions to Accra’s recurring flood problems, especially in vulnerable communities like Adentan.
