The Government of Ghana has officially declared Friday, June 6, 2025, a public holiday to mark the celebration of Eid-ul-Adha, one of the most important festivals on the Islamic calendar. This announcement was made through a statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior and signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.

According to the statement, the day is to be observed as a statutory public holiday throughout the country, and all citizens are encouraged to respect and honor the occasion accordingly.

Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is a significant religious event observed by Muslims around the world. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command — a demonstration of faith and devotion. The festival also coincides with the conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, which is a central pillar of Islam.

As part of the celebration, Muslims gather for special prayers at mosques and open grounds, perform the ritual sacrifice of animals such as sheep or cows, and share the meat with family, friends, and the less privileged. The occasion is also marked by charitable giving, family gatherings, and community outreach.

The government’s declaration ensures that businesses, schools, and public institutions will remain closed on that day to allow Muslims and all Ghanaians to partake in the festivities and reflect on the values of sacrifice, unity, and generosity.
