NATIONWIDE EXCAVATOR TRACKING SYSTEM LAUNCHED TO TACKLE ILLEGAL MINING
EXCAVATOR TRACKING SYSTEM LAUNCHED
The Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining has called on the government of Ghana to implement a nationwide tracking system for excavators as part of intensified efforts to combat illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
During a visit to the Ghana Mine Repository and Tracking Control Centre, Dr. Ken Ashigbey, the Coalition's Convenor, stressed that scaling up the tracking system is crucial. He explained that the system would allow authorities to monitor excavator movements in real time, ensuring that the machines are used only within authorized mining concessions.
To support this initiative, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) began mandatory registration of all excavators entering Ghana’s ports on May 1, 2025. This is intended to create a centralized database to trace ownership and ensure lawful usage.
In addition, the government is deploying advanced technologies such as geo-fencing and remote immobilization to prevent the misuse of excavators. The Minerals Commission has set up a control center to oversee and enforce compliance with mining regulations, enhancing transparency and accountability.
These efforts form part of a broader strategy to clamp down on illegal mining and promote responsible, sustainable mining practices across the country.
