NADMO CONFIRMS FIVE DEATHS

ACCRA FLOODING

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has confirmed that five people have died as a result of severe flooding in Accra following a heavy downpour. The rain, which lasted for about three hours, caused significant disruptions and submerged several areas of the city.

George Ayisi, the Public Relations Officer for NADMO, stated that the deaths were recorded in different locations, including Ablekuma, Adjei Kojo in Ashaiman, and Odorna at Adabraka. The victims reportedly drowned or were swept away by fast-moving floodwaters.

Additionally, a six-year-old child is reported missing in Sowutuom, a suburb of Accra, after being caught in the floodwaters. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing.

Prior to the incident, the Ghana Meteorological Agency had issued warnings about possible heavy rains and thunderstorms in southern Ghana. They advised residents to take precautions, particularly in flood-prone areas, as the country enters the peak of its rainy season.

The recent floods have once again highlighted the persistent problems Accra faces during the rainy season—namely, inadequate drainage systems, poor urban planning, unregulated construction, and indiscriminate waste disposal. These issues continue to make parts of the capital highly susceptible to flooding, often with deadly consequences.

Authorities are urging the public to stay alert and cooperate with emergency services to reduce further risk and loss of life.
