MAHAMA WARNS OF LEADERSHIP CHANGES AT VRA IF AKOSOMBO DAM FLOODING HAPPENS AGAIN

LEADERSHIP CHANGES AT VRA

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed strong concerns over the Volta River Authority's (VRA) handling of the 2023 Akosombo Dam spillage, which displaced over 39,000 people. He has called on the government to declare a state of emergency in the affected regions and seek international assistance, emphasizing that the disaster's scale surpasses Ghana's economic capacity.

Mahama criticized the VRA for its slow response and inadequate support to flood victims, urging the authority to accelerate relief efforts and address the dire conditions in the affected communities. While he did not explicitly call for dismissals, Mahama stressed the need for accountability and preventive measures to avoid a repeat of such a catastrophe.

Other political figures, like Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana, have gone further—demanding the resignation of the VRA CEO and the Energy Minister for their roles in the crisis.

In essence, Mahama’s comments reflect a broader concern about the need for improved disaster management and leadership responsibility in national institutions like the VRA.
