JUSTICE TORKONOO'S EXTRA AFFIDAVIT STRUCK OUT BY SUPREME COURT
JUSTICE TORKONOO'S EXTRA AFFIDAVIT
The Supreme Court of Ghana has struck out a supplementary affidavit submitted by suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo as part of her legal bid to halt ongoing proceedings against her. The affidavit was filed in support of an interlocutory injunction she sought, aiming to suspend the work of the committee probing allegations against her.
During the hearing, the apex court ruled that the supplementary affidavit did not comply with procedural requirements and therefore could not be considered as part of her application. This ruling represents a notable setback in Justice Torkornoo's efforts to challenge the investigative process initiated against her.
Justice Torkornoo was suspended by President John Mahama on April 22, 2025, following the submission of a petition that raised questions about her conduct. After an initial assessment determined that the petition had sufficient merit, the President, in accordance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, established a committee to investigate the matter. Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was appointed as Acting Chief Justice during her suspension.
The Supreme Court’s decision to reject the supplementary affidavit could potentially affect the trajectory of the case, narrowing the legal options available to Justice Torkornoo as the inquiry proceeds.
