GRIDCo WORKERS CALL FOR FAIRNESS AND TRANSPARENCY
Employees of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) have expressed deep concern over the company’s worsening financial state, which they attribute to large unpaid debts—particularly from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). These mounting arrears have severely disrupted GRIDCo’s ability to maintain infrastructure and procure essential materials, raising fears of a possible return to widespread power outages, locally known as “dumsor.”
At the heart of the problem is the breakdown of the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM), a system created to ensure fair revenue distribution across the energy sector. According to GRIDCo staff, ECG—their main client—only pays 18% to 25% of its monthly bills, which exceed GH₵100 million, and often delays these payments. This has made it difficult for GRIDCo to pay its suppliers and maintain reliable service.
Other power sector players, such as the Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), also owe GRIDCo significant sums. Combined, these debts have reached roughly GH₵814 million, threatening the company’s operations and prompting staff to consider industrial action if payments are not made.
The Institute for Energy Security (IES) has pointed to broader governance issues in the sector, citing mismanagement and a lack of accountability. Despite taking over a relatively stable power sector, the current administration has failed to sustain improvements, leading to more frequent outages and growing financial inefficiencies.
In an effort to strengthen transparency, GRIDCo has partnered with the Right to Information (RTI) Commission to educate staff about their rights under the RTI Act. This initiative aims to promote a culture of openness and better decision-making within the organization.
The ongoing challenges highlight the urgent need for financial reform and improved leadership in Ghana’s energy sector to ensure reliable electricity and long-term sustainability.
