A fire outbreak at the Obuasi Substation of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) on the evening of Wednesday, May 21, 2025, has caused widespread power outages across Obuasi and neighboring communities in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred around 9:12 PM, prompting GRIDCo personnel to promptly disconnect the station from the national power grid as a safety precaution. Firefighters from AngloGold Ashanti quickly responded and managed to bring the flames under control.

Following the incident, GRIDCo has assured residents of a swift restoration of power. The company has deployed its engineering team to carry out a thorough assessment of the substation’s equipment. These integrity checks are crucial to ensure that the infrastructure is safe and functional before power supply is reinstated.

GRIDCo emphasized its dedication to maintaining the stability and reliability of Ghana’s National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), which it manages. Since its establishment in August 2008, GRIDCo has played a central role in transmitting electricity from bulk suppliers such as the Volta River Authority (VRA) to 33 bulk customers and various distribution companies both within Ghana and in neighboring West African countries.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official communications from GRIDCo and local media updates as work continues to restore power to the affected areas.
