GOVERNMENT INAUGURATES TASK FORCE TO ACCELERATE LAUNCH OF NATIONAL AIRLINE
LAUNCH OF NATIONAL AIRLINE
The Government of Ghana has inaugurated a special task force to accelerate the launch of a new national airline, aiming to strengthen the country’s aviation sector and improve regional air connectivity. The task force is chaired by Charles Asare, former Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, and includes aviation professionals, government officials, and regulatory experts.
Key members include Twumasi Ankrah Selby (Vice Chair), Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare (MD of Ghana Airports Company), Rev. Stephen Arthur (Director-General, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority), and other seasoned figures in the aviation industry. A representative from the Ministry of Transport is also part of the group.
Their mandate covers developing a business model, ensuring regulatory compliance, overseeing operational logistics such as fleet acquisition and staffing, and fostering strategic partnerships. They are expected to report progress regularly to the Presidency through the Ministry of Transport.
Ghana has lacked a national airline since the collapse of Ghana Airways in 2004 and Ghana International Airlines in 2010. While previous efforts to establish a new carrier have failed, this renewed initiative reflects the government's determination to position Ghana as a major aviation hub in West Africa.
This development also supports Ghana’s vision under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by enhancing air mobility and economic integration across the continent.
