GHANA TO PHASE OUT CRUDE OIL IN POWER GENERATION WITH LAUNCH OF SECOND GAS PROCESSING PLANT
LAUNCH OF SECOND GAS PROCESSING PLANT
Ghana is set to eliminate the use of crude oil in electricity generation following the commissioning of a second gas processing facility. President John Mahama announced the initiative on May 14, 2025, emphasizing the government’s commitment to transitioning fully to natural gas for power production.
The new gas processing plant will significantly boost Ghana’s capacity to deliver natural gas to thermal power plants, such as the Takoradi Thermal Power Station, which currently operates on a mix of light crude oil and gas. The shift is expected to enhance fuel efficiency, lower generation costs, and reduce the environmental impact of power production.
This move is part of Ghana’s broader strategy to diversify its energy sources. By expanding domestic gas infrastructure, the country aims to reduce dependence on imported fuels and ensure a more stable and sustainable electricity supply. It also reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen the energy sector through cleaner alternatives and improved infrastructure.
