Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service today, Monday, May 26, 2025.

This appearance follows a failed attempt by a combined team of National Security and police officers to arrest him at his residence in Kumasi on Friday, May 23. The operation, which was reportedly unannounced, attracted a large number of party supporters who resisted the officers and caused a standoff.

While the exact reasons for the attempted arrest and the CID invitation have not been officially disclosed, it is widely speculated that it may be linked to ongoing investigations into alleged illegal mining operations involving Akonta Mining—a company associated with Chairman Wontumi. The company has previously been accused of engaging in mining activities without proper authorization.

Chairman Wontumi, through his lawyer Kwame Adom Appiah, has denied any involvement in illegal activity. The lawyer emphasized their willingness to cooperate fully with the authorities, stating, “We have not committed any crime, and we are prepared to meet with the police as requested.”

The incident has heightened political tension, with many NPP supporters describing the actions of the security personnel as politically motivated. They are calling on the authorities to ensure fairness and adherence to due process.

Chairman Wontumi’s appearance before the CID today is expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the attempted arrest and the nature of the investigation.
