AWUTU SENYA EAST MUNCIPAL ASSEMBLY LAUNCHES DECONGESTION

NADMO

The Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly has launched a major decongestion and sanitation initiative in Kasoa, dubbed "Operation Clean Your Frontage." This campaign aims to tackle the municipality’s growing waste management problems, which have worsened due to rapid urban expansion and inadequate waste disposal systems.

The campaign was officially introduced by the Municipal Chief Executive, Anita Love Obo Amissah, and forms part of a broader strategy to enhance cleanliness and public health in the area. As part of the exercise, the Assembly has instituted monthly clean-up operations, set to take place during the final week of each month from 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

To ensure compliance, residents and businesses found violating sanitation regulations will face on-the-spot penalties, which could include instant fines or mandatory cleaning duties. The Assembly has also acquired waste collection vehicles, including tricycles, to improve garbage disposal efficiency.

Currently, Kasoa produces around 118 tonnes of waste daily, with only about 70% being collected, primarily through partnerships with private waste management companies. However, the municipality still lacks a dedicated landfill site. At present, waste is transported to a facility in Ojobi, within the Gomoa East District. To address this challenge, the Assembly is in the process of acquiring a 28-acre plot in Ojobi to establish a new landfill.

The need for improved sanitation was brought into sharp focus after a cholera outbreak in November 2024, which claimed five lives and led to more than 30 hospitalizations. Health authorities attributed the outbreak to unsanitary conditions and emphasized the importance of personal and environmental hygiene.

In addition, the Assembly has partnered with civil society groups like the Sanitation Ghana Movement to organize clean-up efforts. These include the desilting of gutters and sweeping of public areas, encouraging community involvement in maintaining a healthier environment.

Through these coordinated actions, the Assembly aims to create a cleaner, safer, and more livable city for residents of Kasoa.
