Ghana has announced plans to build a second gas processing facility, known as GPP2, under the Ghana National Gas Company Limited. The initiative, revealed by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, at the Africa Energy Forum during the 2025 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), is part of the country’s strategy to strengthen energy independence and position itself as a major energy player in sub-Saharan Africa.
The new plant has received Cabinet approval for immediate construction. It will be state-owned and is expected to create employment opportunities, particularly for the youth and recent graduates, while supporting Ghana’s broader development objectives.
A $700 million deal has already been signed for the project, which will have an initial processing capacity of 150 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd), with room for expansion to 300 MMscfd. It will process gas from the Greater Jubilee and TEN fields, increasing Ghana’s total gas processing capacity to 450 MMscfd.
The GPP2 project is a key part of the government’s plan to ensure energy security, drive industrial growth, and reduce dependency on imported fuels by maximizing the use of domestic gas resources.
