Michael Kpakpo Allotey has officially taken over as the Mayor of Accra after receiving unanimous approval from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). During a Special General Assembly Meeting on May 6, 2025, he secured all 30 valid votes cast, surpassing the two-thirds majority required under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936). The voting process was overseen by Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, who urged Assembly Members to work together beyond political lines for the city’s development.
In his acceptance speech, Allotey expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for the appointment, emphasizing that he does not take the responsibility lightly. He pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessors and lead efforts to transform Accra in line with the government’s vision. “We are going to reset Accra—starting now,” he declared.
Allotey brings extensive private sector experience in real estate, petroleum, and logistics. Before his appointment, he led Our God Is Good Real Estate and held managerial roles at KYG Consultancy, EXOLUBE Company Ltd, and DIMD Ghana, where he introduced cost-saving measures. Politically, he has been an active member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and recently served as Director of Operations for the party’s Okaikwei South Constituency.
Council of State representative Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey I, who chairs the Economic and Social Development Committee, urged the new mayor to tackle key urban challenges such as sanitation, congestion, housing, youth unemployment, and social equity with strategic planning and discipline.
The confirmation was met with widespread celebration among Assembly Members, traditional leaders, political figures, and residents, signaling a shared commitment to the city's progress.
