Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, has stated that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) May 5 protest is focused on protecting the independence of Ghana’s judiciary and not in support of the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking to the media, Darko emphasized that the demonstration is a response to what the NPP sees as increasing executive interference in the judiciary under President John Mahama’s administration. He accused the president of pursuing a politically motivated agenda with the suspension of the Chief Justice, aimed at weakening the judiciary’s autonomy and consolidating power within the executive arm of government.
Darko insisted that the judiciary must remain independent and free from political influence to safeguard democracy. He urged Ghanaians to view the protest as a broader call to preserve constitutional governance rather than as a defense of any individual.
