A significant fire broke out at the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) Achimota Bulk Supply Station H on Sunday, May 4, 2025, following a loud explosion around 11:00 a.m. The incident severely damaged critical infrastructure, including Earthen Transformer “2”, leading to unplanned power outages across several parts of Accra.

Areas affected by the blackout included Achimota, Kaneshie, Kokomlemle, Asylum Down, Pig Farm, Kotobabi, Circle, Adabraka, New Town, Nima, GIMPA, Kisseiman, and the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).

Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service arrived swiftly and managed to bring the fire under control. By evening, ECG engineers had restored power to most of the affected areas, with efforts ongoing to fully stabilize the power supply.

The incident has sparked calls for improved fire safety measures at key power infrastructure sites.
