
A fierce fire erupted at the Lapaz Market in Accra on Sunday, April 27, 2025, destroying a textile shop and leaving one person hospitalized.
The fire started on the top floor of a building,consuming bedding products and merchandise worth millions of Ghanaian cedis. The shop owner,a young woman, reportedly collapsed in shock upon seeing her shop ablaze and was rushed to the Lapaz Community Hospital for medical care.
Firefighters from the Ghana National Fire Service(GNFS) at Abelenkpe quickly responded and managed to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby stores.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, with investigations currently underway. ADO I Emmanuel Akwetey, Operations Officer at the Abelenkpe GNFS, indicated that the shop owner will be invited to provide additional information as part of the investigation.
This incident highlights the urgent need for stronger fire safety measures in markets, including the installation of fire extinguishers,use of fire-resistant materials,proper electrical installations, and fire insurance coverage to help business owners recover from such losses.
