NPP's Economic Mismanagement Lacks Accountability: NDC's Dr. Spio-Garbrah

In a recent interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Dr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah, the former Minister and Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Business Development Committee, has launched a scathing critique of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) economic management under President Nana Akufo-Addo. Dr. Spio-Garbrah, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics and a seasoned economist, drew sharp comparisons between the current administration's economic performance and that of former President John Mahama, emphasizing Mahama's superior governance during his tenure.

Dr. Spio-Garbrah’s comments come at a time when public discontent over economic conditions in Ghana is reaching a boiling point. Inflation rates have soared, and many Ghanaians are grappling with rising costs of living, which have placed a significant strain on households. The former minister did not hold back as he asserted that Mahama’s administration not only had a more effective strategy for managing the economy but also exhibited greater oversight and accountability.

A more responsive economic structure that prioritized equitable growth was seen under Mahama, according to Dr. Spio-Garbrah stated, highlighting specific policies that addressed unemployment and boosted local industries. He contrasted this with what he perceives as the NPP’s mismanagement, citing the lack of accountability within the current Economic Management Team (EMT).

While acknowledging the existence of the EMT, Dr. Spio-Garbrah underscored that the ultimate power in economic decisions lies with the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, whose close familial ties with President Akufo-Addo have raised eyebrows and led to concerns over governance. No political appointment is more than that of finance minister; the role has heavy burdens. However, in this administration, his authority seems unchecked due to his relationship with the president,” he remarked.

Dr. Spio-Garbrah pointed to a recent attempt by over 90 NPP Members of Parliament to push for the removal of Ofori-Atta as a clear indication of growing dissent within the party regarding the economic direction. However, despite these efforts, the Finance Minister remains in his position, largely due to the unwavering support from President Akufo-Addo."With the president's support, most lawmakers in parliament are helpless in this matter. It raises questions about the integrity of our political institutions,” he lamented.

He further elaborated on how previous administrations managed to keep the EMT accountable, explaining, “In earlier governments, we did not face such challenges because the EMT operated independently, and its members were held to rigorous standards. Today, with the finance minister being the president’s cousin, the dynamic has changed dramatically. We must confront the nepotism that clouds our economic management.”

As the interview continued, Dr. Spio-Garbrah urged Ghanaians to demand more transparency from their leaders and to hold them accountable for the state of the economy. He expressed hope that the upcoming elections would provide a platform for change, where voters would choose leaders who prioritize the nation's economic well-being over personal ties.

In closing, Dr. Spio-Garbrah reiterated his belief that a more collaborative approach, devoid of nepotism and favoritism, is essential for Ghana to reclaim its economic stability. It is critical that our leaders put the needs of the people before their own and refuse to compromise on this issue. Ghana deserves better,” he declared emphatically.
