Afenyo-Markin Goes to Court over Minority Stance on MPs Going Independent

The Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has filed a lawsuit at the Supreme Court to prevent the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, from ruling on an application submitted by the Minority caucus. According to the Majority Leader, his lawyers have already initiated legal proceedings, seeking an injunction to stop the Speaker from deciding on the matter.  “I want to seek the proper interpretation of Constitutional Article 97,” he remarked. Hon. Afenyo-Markin made this statement during a media briefing organized by the Media Relations Department of Parliament. The “Leaders’ Briefing,” held at the start of each parliamentary meeting, offers the media an overview of the agenda to be discussed on the floor of the House. The Majority Leader emphasized the significance of the 5th meeting of the Fourth Session of Parliament, which began on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
He highlighted the critical role of the media in bridging the gap between Parliament and the public, especially as the 2024 elections draw near.  “Your role as media professionals is central in ensuring effective communication between Parliament and citizens,” he said.
Hon. Afenyo-Markin stressed the need for a more organized and efficient parliamentary session, especially during this election year. He outlined plans to include dedicated decision days to expedite the processing of non-controversial bills, which would allow MPs to balance their constituency work with their parliamentary duties.
Speaking on behalf of the Clerk of Parliament, the Deputy Clerk in charge of Information Management Services (IMS), Dr. Gloria Sarku-Kumawu, noted that the briefing was a pivotal step in ensuring citizens remain informed about legislative processes that impact their lives. Parliament looks forward to a productive session and continued cooperation of the media, she stated.
