The Lagos State Government has signed a strategic partnership with Zoomlion Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Ghana’s Jospong Group, to overhaul the state's waste management system. This move is aimed at modernizing the way waste is collected, processed, and disposed of, while also promoting environmental sustainability and job creation.

Key Project Highlights

• Construction of Modern Waste Facilities:
  A major component of the agreement includes building a Transfer Loading Station (TLS) at the Olusosun dumpsite. This facility will handle the movement of approximately 2,500 tonnes of waste daily to a new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Ikorodu. The project sets the stage for the eventual closure of the Olusosun landfill.
• Expansion to Other Locations:
  A similar initiative is planned for the Solous III site in Igando, which will transfer around 1,500 tonnes of waste daily to another facility in Badagry. These efforts aim to reduce landfill use and increase recycling and resource recovery.
• Job Creation and Economic Impact:
  The partnership is expected to create more than 5,000 jobs, both directly and indirectly, through the development and operation of new waste management infrastructure.
• Public-Private Collaboration:
  The project is structured as a public-private partnership, combining government oversight with private sector efficiency and investment. This model is intended to ensure long-term success and sustainable growth.

Governor’s Remarks

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the urgency of reforming waste management in a state that produces about 13,000 tonnes of waste every day. He stated that the new infrastructure would allow for the complete shutdown of the Olusosun dumpsite, which has been a longstanding environmental challenge.
