MOM VENDORS TO UNDERGO SAFETY TRAINING AMID SURGE IN ATTACKS
MOMO VENDORS TO UNDERGO SAFETY TRAINING
In light of increasing violent attacks on Mobile Money (MoMo) vendors across Ghana, stakeholders in the mobile money sector are introducing safety education programs to enhance the security of these vendors.
The Electronic Money Issuers (EMIs) Chamber of Ghana has stressed the urgent need for vendors to adopt safety precautions, including closing operations earlier, minimizing large cash holdings, and investing in security measures such as CCTV systems and panic alarms.
The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana (MoMAG) is also stepping up efforts by organizing regular safety awareness sessions and preparing virtual training programs to help vendors operate more safely, especially in high-risk areas.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has initiated safety workshops aimed at equipping MoMo agents with the knowledge and skills needed to protect themselves and their businesses.
These measures follow a disturbing rise in attacks, including several fatal incidents involving MoMo vendors in areas such as Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region. Criminals have been targeting vendors for cash and mobile devices, prompting police to increase efforts to arrest those responsible and encouraging the public to report any suspicious activities.
These collaborative actions between industry bodies, security agencies, and local authorities aim to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of MoMo vendors and maintain the stability of Ghana’s mobile financial services.
