GRA SETS SIGHTS ON DIGITAL SECTOR TO STRENGTHEN TAX NET
DIGITAL SECTOR TO ENHANCE TAX COLLECTION
The Ghana Revenue Authority(GRA) is shifting its focus to the rapidly expanding digital economy as part of efforts to increase tax revenue and broaden the national tax base.
According to Commissioner General Anthony Sarpong, many businesses now operate online rather than through traditional brick and mortar setups. Platforms like Instagram have become popular hubs for services and commerce, yet many of these digital ventures remain outside the tax net.
"Instead of physical stores, many businesses today are trading online. In Ghana, you can find countless service providers on platforms like Instagram. The challenge now is how to bring all these digital entreprenuers into the tax system,"Sarpong noted.
He emphasized that the GRA has already launched initiatives to integrate the digital economy into tax collection framework, describing it as a crucial step toward future revenue sustainability.
This move follows previous successes in digital tax initiatives, such as the electronic VAT (e-VAT) syatem, which reportedly led to a 32% increase in revenue during its pilot phase. The GRA's broader goal is to ensure fair taxation across alls ectors and build a resilient, future-ready revenue system.
