Election 2024: Schedule issued by the EC

In a significant lead-up to the political season's peak, the Electoral Commission (EC) will accept nominations of candidates for this year's presidential and parliamentary elections from September 9 to September 13.

On September 23, 2024, votes for the presidential ballot will be cast; on September 24, 2024, votes for the legislature will be cast.

In addition, if all goes as planned, the EC hopes to release the results of the 2024 presidential election three days after the polls close.

The Election Commission (EC) has released its 2024 general election schedule, which was exclusively obtained by The Daily Graphic. The schedule includes a voter registration drive from May 7 to May 27, 2024, and a nationwide voter ID card replacement campaign starting on May 30, 2024.

However, a 56-day public education campaign about the exercise will take place ahead of the registration drive, from April 1 to May 26, 2024.

According to the schedule made available to the Daily Graphic, the EC plans to hold an exhibition of the voters register from July 15 to 24, 2024, and submit the provisional voters' register to the political parties between July 9 and July 18, 2024.

Between August 30 and September 5, 2024, the political parties are anticipated to receive the final voter register.

Meetings: As per the schedule, the EC will meet with stakeholders outside the political party framework in between the dates and will also use its "Let the Citizen Know" series to interact with the public.

According to EC sources, the goal of this initiative was to dispel any doubt and mistrust by making sure that all parties involved recognised and valued the efforts made to secure a free and fair election process.

According to the source, the exercise would be compliant with the EC's duty to guarantee and improve the open and transparent functioning of the electoral procedures.

Five days prior to the primary votes, on December 2, the EC will hold its Special Voting for a limited group of professionals, according to sources at the organisation who spoke with the Daily Graphic.

On December 7, 2024, it will open to security agencies and authorised media professionals who will be working on election day.

The Daily Graphic has been informed by the sources that all of the dates are subject to review.

Results
According to the sources, the EC planned to make sure it could announce the results of the presidential election no later than three days, even though there was no legal requirement for it to do so.

According to the sources, the Regional Collation Centres would continue to be used to announce the outcomes at the regional level.
