COURT RULING ALLOWS GACL TO RECLAIM AIRPORT LANDS FROM MCDAN GROUP
RECLAIM AIRPORT LANDS FROM MCDAN GROUP
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has regained control of over 16 acres of prime airport land following a ruling by the Accra High Court on May 6, 2025. The court granted GACL full possession of two plots—measuring approximately 10.63 and 5.66 acres—situated near Kotoka International Airport, close to Action Chapel International.
These lands had been occupied since 2012 by McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited, both subsidiaries of the McDan Group. GACL initiated legal proceedings in February 2025, citing breaches of lease agreements and unpaid ground rent totaling $26,296.
The court found in favor of GACL, granting all the reliefs requested. This included repossession of the lands, payment of the outstanding rent, and GH¢50,000 in legal costs. The judgment followed the failure of the McDan companies to present a valid defense.
This legal success forms part of GACL’s broader efforts to enforce its rights and recover public assets. It follows a related dispute in December 2024, when McDan Aviation’s operations at Terminal 1 of the Kotoka International Airport were temporarily suspended over debt, which was later resolved.
GACL’s management has praised the court decision, emphasizing the combined efforts of its Legal Department and Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare. With the land now back under its control, GACL is expected to pursue aviation-related developments or strategic partnerships to maximize the site’s potential.
