ACCRA MAYOR VOWS TO PROVIDE PERMANENT TRADING SPACES FOR STREET HAWKERS WITHIN TWO MONTHS

PERMANENT TRADING SPACES, ACCRA MAYOR VOWS

Mayor

The Mayor of Accra, Elizabeth Sackey, has launched an initiative to offer permanent trading spaces to street hawkers, reaffirming her commitment to supporting informal traders and enhancing market infrastructure in the city.

As part of this initiative, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun constructing new market sheds at the Agbogbloshie Market, specifically designed to accommodate plantain sellers. The project, expected to be completed in two months, will provide space for about 70 traders, ensuring a safer and more organized environment for their businesses.

This move follows the recent clearance of street hawkers from areas like the Flower Pot Interchange after its completion. Displaced traders have since demanded fulfillment of promises made by city authorities to relocate them to designated trading zones.

Although the current project may not cater to all affected hawkers, it marks a significant step in addressing the challenges faced by informal traders in Accra. The AMA says it remains committed to creating more permanent and hygienic trading environments to support economic activities in the capital.
